This Is Thirteen
Finally flirting with fame thanks to a documentary that shows them as losers in the game of rock, these hard-luck Canucks do their best to play down their goofy poverty-metal legend on their lucky 13th album. Anvil distinguish themselves here by a seriousness that lands somewhere between Iron Maiden biker operatics and fractured Killing Joke rumble. Tempos accelerate toward thrash, but vocals stay comprehensible in old-school metal fashion; the most urgent songs ("Feed the Greed," "Big Business") address an economy that's left the band scrabbling. Holy war's clearly on their mind as well.
