I Predict A Graceful Expulsion
I Predict a Graceful Expulsion is an awfully confident debut album. Though only singing and playing guitar for a couple years, Al Spx already exudes a mature sense of balance. Her music feels both archaic -- reflecting as it does her love of folk revivalism -- and modern, particularly in the way she wraps it in a solemnity not far removed from PJ Harvey or Josh T. Pearson. Critics have described her sound as "doom soul." That's a tad over the top for sure, yet the Canadian-born artist does exude plenty of pathos on "When the City Lights Dim," "Send Your Youth" and the patient builder "Steady."
