Out of Line
Label: Parlophone (France)
Techno has rarely sounded colder or meaner than it does on Gesaffelstein's debut album. Taking inspiration from Belgian EBM, the sepulchral beats of Rotterdam's Bunker label and his mentor, The Hacker, the French producer likes his synths frigid, his drums distorted and his beats practically cryogenic. "Hellifornia" suggests a G-funk apocalypse, "Wall of Memories" riffs on John Carpenter, and "Pursuit" sounds like a rave in the gothic nightclub The Batcave, while the crushing "Hate or Glory" lives up to its title in every way.
