I'm A Mother
"No family is safe/ When I sashay," sings Mike Hadreas on "Queen," the most extroverted and pointed Perfume Genius song to date. If anything here, he's putting his politics into practice, like making sure to show that "pocket" gay men like himself (as he unloads on "Fool") have complex identities you can't fit inside a stereotype. And his dirge-like music matches the need for variation, from the industrial blues of "Grid" to the synth-hypnosis of "Longpig." Toward the album's close he underlines his real agenda: "I don't need your love/ I don't need you to understand/ I need you to listen."
