In 1957, Q took the album title's hepcat advice and went to L.A. to cut a session with a plethora of West Coast jazz stars (from cool players like Art Pepper, Lou Levy, and Buddy Colette to swing masters like Benny Carter and "Sweets" Edison). The result is a delight, with modernist arrangers Jimmy Giuffre, Lennie Niehaus and Johnny Mandel penning the charts for Q.
