Ween have a made a career out of being pretenders. Songs and entire albums -- in the case of 12 Golden Country Greats -- are brash tributes to their fave bands. But rather than being smug, the adoration of Dean and Gene for their hero artists shines through. La Cucaracha is Ween at their most schizo, with songs ranging from a '70s action soundtrack ("Fiesta") to chilled-out psych-pop like Pink Floyd used to make ("Spirit Walker") to Erasure-esque electronic pop ("Friends") to a 10-minute, Cream-like shred session ("Woman and Man"). The only thing missing is medieval lute music.
